Christmas is in full swing in my household. I put my tree up last night and was rewarded with snow this morning! It certainly is beginning to look a lot like Christmas. The holidays are always a little hard since the passing of my dad, but this year I’ve decided to embrace the season and have fun. I’m throwing a Christmas party and still have a little bit more decorating (and baking) to do. If you’re like me, you may get a little stressed when it comes to making your home fancy for the season, but there is no need to stress, many holiday home decor ideas can be simple to pull together. Here is a collection of festive decorating ideas that you can easily do yourself and at a low cost.
Dress up more than just your tree with ornaments.
Ornaments don’t have to be confined to the Christmas tree. There are many other things you can do with them. They come in such a variety of colors, shapes, and designs that they car very versatile.
- Add color to your windows. All you need are ornaments, a tension rod, string, and garland. Hang the ornaments with string to the tension rod. Hang them at varied heights. Hide the tension rod by wrapping it with garland.
- Create a stunning center piece. Fill glass jars of various shapes and sizes with ornaments and add a ribbon to the jars.
- Have a shadowbox you haven’t decorated yet? Fill it with ornaments and hang it up. It brings festive color to your walls.
- Have extra scrabble pieces? Turn them into personalized ornaments.
- Make bottle cap snowmen. Paint them white, add the details with black paint and orange for the carrot nose. Finally just glue the bottle caps onto a ribbon to hang them. You can add yarn or ribbon to create a scarf.
- Create a ornament that preserves memories. This is simple, take a plain plastic ornament that can be written on. Write down the great memories from the year. Do this every year and you can look back at the fun adventures your family had.
Get creative with your Holiday greeting cards.
You can display all those greeting cards you receive in a way that turns them into a decoration. Make a card display wreath out of floral wire, paint, wooden beads, clothes pins, and a little ribbon. Just paint the clothes pins and beads if you desire and let them dry. Then string them together on the floral wire. It will take a little forming to create the circle shape. Once your done, twist the ends together to secure and use the ribbon to hang your wreath. Now just clip on your cards!
Bring the cheer into your kitchen.
It’s hard to decorate a kitchen with out losing space and function. But there are a few things you can to add Holiday cheer to your kitchen that won’t interrupt your daily routine.
- Simply changing the color of your towels and pot holders to match the season will bring the cheer into your everyday routines. And you only have to buy them once, then store them with your decorations after Christmas is over.
- Dress up your cabinets with ribbon. It is simple and this can double as a card display. Just use clothes pins to clip the cards to the ribbon.
- Invest in Holiday plates and coffee mugs. Bring them out once a year to bring festive cheer to your meals and coffee breaks.
Get the kids involved in the decorating.
Kids love helping and they love crafts. Take a little time to with your kids to create some cute and festive decorations for your house and their rooms.
- Make snowmen out of plant pots. Turn them upside down and paint them white. Use craft paper or ribbon to create a scarf at the base. Paint on silly faces. Add pom poms for ear muffs.
- Make your own snow globes. You will need mason jars, a plastic toy or other item that can fit in the jar, baby oil, glitter, and a strong glue. Glue the item to the mason jar lid. Pour in the baby oil and glitter then close the lid. Ta-da! A cute and fun Holiday decoration.
- Now this idea isn’t really a home decoration tip but it is a great thing to do with your kids. Wrap 24 Holiday story books in Christmas paper. Where you store them can add to the Holiday decor, try placing them in a basket by your fireplace if you have one. Open one a day and read it with your kids, it becomes an advent and gives you time with your kids.
