The scariest night of the year is just around the corner. It’s an evening of cauldrons and candy. And there’s no better way to get into the spirit of Halloween than by giving your home a haunted makeover. We’ve all seen the traditional pumpkins and black cats, but if you’re just like me, I know you’re dying to think outside the usual jack-o-lantern. As many of you may already know, I go all out for Halloween. I have an annual themed Halloween party where I completely transform the first level of my home. So in order to take your home decor from Ethan Allen to Edgar Allen [Poe], I’ve devised some fun DIY crafts that are sure to make your house a real scream!
Graveyard Wreath
For a positively ghastly way to greet your trick-or-treaters, hang this bone-chilling wreath on your front door. You’ll need a 12 inch styrofoam wreath form and two 50 yard spools of tulle preferably in black or grey. Cut the tulle into strips. Tie each strip around the wreath form. The length of each strip’s excess fabric will determine the fullness of the wreath. So for a fluffier look, leave more excess fabric. Continue until the entire hoop is covered in tulle. Then, the rest of the decorating is up to you. For a creepy touch, attach some plastic bones, eyeballs or rubber bats. For an easier Raven-inspired wreath, buy a black feather boa, wrap it around the wreath hoop and glue it.
Spider Web Jars
This Halloween, why not give old jack (o-lantern) the night off with these spooky spiderweb jars? For this project you’ll need a mason jar, some colored glowsticks, fake cobwebs and rubber spiders. Arrange the spiders and spider webs in the jar so that it fills to the top. Then, light the glowsticks as instructed on the package and place them in the jar. Be sure to tuck them behind the cobwebs so only the light shines through, giving the jar a positively eerie glow! These make fun centerpieces for your table or a creative way to light the path for trick-or-treaters.
Ding Dong the Witch is Dead
For those who live in a neighborhood with younger children, here’s a craft idea that’s more kooky than spooky. My inspiration was from The Wizard of Oz. Purchase a pair of striped tights and cut them in half to create two separate “legs.” Using cotton batting, proceed to stuff each leg until you’ve reached the desired length. Sew the tops of each stocking. Place them at the front of your house and adjust them so it looks like the legs are coming from beneath the house. Add a pair of black shoes to finish the legs. For even more fun cover the shoes in red glitter to create “ruby red slippers” and add a sign that says “Beware of Falling Houses!”
Spooky Halloween Printable
If you’re lucky enough to have a fireplace mantle, here’s the perfect printable to help spook up your decor. This one-of-a-kind printable speaks to all that is fun, spooky, and great about Halloween. This Halloween, don’t let the idea of creating a haunted house scare you.
