When it comes to your wedding pictures it’s okay to be picky. There are a lot of aspects that go into your wedding that you can’t and don’t need to put much effort into, but selecting a good photographer is not one of those things. Here are a few things to ask and know before hiring your photographer:
Know your style
Photography is a form of art and art is self expression. If you want light and airy photos that highlight your dress and beautiful details – find a photographer that specializes in that. Do your research to determine what vibe you want your wedding photos to have and find a photographer that fits that. Don’t be afraid to be picky, you will make the photographer’s job a lot easier if you appreciate their style and can give them creative freedom.
Meet your photographer in person
They need to get to know you just as much as you need to get to know them. Plan an in person meeting or Skype time to get to know them face to face and be able to ask them all the important questions so that you can get a feel for who they are and make sure there aren’t any obvious red flags.
Questions to ask: What all does this photography package include? How long after the wedding will it take to receive our photos? Will you have any assistants? How long/How many weddings have you shot? Have you ever shot any weddings at *insert venue*?
Check Reviews
Not every photographer will have this, but if at all possible check all online ratings and reviews. There are a lot of wedding websites that will have these reviews if you can’t find them on the popular websites. Photographers that have their own websites typically have reviews on there too. If you have a friend/acquaintance that has any previous experience with this photographer ask for their input as well!
Tech Savvy-ness
Drone footage of the venue pre-ceremony is becoming increasingly common amongst couples all over. Photographers are all scrambling to keep up with each other on these trendy tech advancements but it’s impossible to all stay on the same level. If you want certain shots that take a specific camera, angle, etc. that might not be something your photographer can technologically do – make sure to ask beforehand.
Plan B
Make sure you have a backup plan in case something happens to your photographer. There are so many different issues that can arise and leave you photographer-less last minute on your big day. Don’t make your family follow you around with portrait mode – speak to your photographer about a backup plan in case there is an illness, accident, etc. If nothing else you’ll have peace of mind and one less thing to stress about!
