Imagine a time (or think back to when you were a kid)…before we lived in a world of living color, we walked thru a world of black and white…where soda shops shared space with apothecaries…polka-dotted aprons graced the waists that cooked each meal with love…and a-line dresses hung neatly in closets that defined an era…
If you are looking to relive an era gone by, here are 7 simple tips for keeping your 50’s summer soiree authentic and chic!
Choose remakes of tin signs in place of paper cutouts
Paper party cutouts are a dime a dozen and they lack the authentic look of real vintage signs. While you will not likely want to spend a small fortune on real vintage signs, the remakes of these signs can be just as authentic-looking. Consider diner signs with food prices listed or soda ads that celebrate the favorite brands of the day.
Create a 50’s playlist and throw in some surprises
While you will certainly want to play recognizable favorites like Elvis and Chubby Checker, don’t forget the more obscure sounds of the 50s. Your guests will recognize these hits within a few lines and playing these lesser known favorites will create a more authentic “straight from the radio” vibe.
Avoid costumes
Fifties fashion is not only better recreated without costumes but you can actually save money if you avoid them. In fact, stores like ModCloth carry an array of styles that are not only a true nod to 50’s fashion but also reusable ones. You probably can’t re-purpose a costume for the office, but with a chic remake you can wear your new frock anywhere… not just for a one-time party.
Invite your guests in style
When choosing invites, go for the less obvious. Avoid loud prints and opt for a typewriter face with mixed media elements. For example, a red gingham ribbon is the perfect nod to a Saturday picnic 50’s style.
Set up a candy bar
From gumballs to lollipops, 50’s candies were perfectly pretty and always colorful. Typically sold from glass jars, these colorful candies are a nostalgic way to give thanks to your guests. On their way out, guests can choose candies to fill small party bags as they exit. Have someone work the candy bar to be sure there is enough to go around and to create an authentic experience as well.
Splurge on drinkware
Drinkware looked much different in the 50’s and even giving a little extra attention to detail here and there can help. From Coke glasses to un-printed soda-style cups, the right drinkware can go a long way. If you cannot afford a big budget for glassware, stick to clear plastic soda cups with pretty paper straws.
Use real linens
All the comforts of home were truly celebrated in the 50’s and while it can be tempting to snag a cheaper, plastic tablecloth from a party chain… your party will fare much better with real linens in the authentic department. Real linens give an air of elegance to your soiree and best of all, you can reuse them time and time again for future gatherings.
*Helpful hint: Rental tables may be too long for store-bought linens. Save money and time by making a tablecloth yourself the weekend before your bash. Simply get the length and width you need and hem the bottom. If you don’t have an eye for sewing, consider double-sided fabric tape.
