You’re engaged—congratulations! It’s all about the details as you begin to plan your dream wedding. Whether you are planning a formal fete or favor a casual, bohemian look, your choice of décor can and should reflect your own original style and personality.
Though weddings are all about tradition, every new bridal season brings a few hot style trends. In 2017, we crushed on rose gold, spread lush greenery table runners on rustic farm tables, and swapped tiered cakes for pretty pastel macaron towers. The start of a new year (and a spring royal wedding in the works!) brings us some fresh style inspiration for your 2018 festivities. These are a few of the popular wedding trends that we’ll be seeing at this year’s celebrations:
The color of choice is: purple!
Brilliant Ultra Violet, that is. With the announcement of the Pantone Color of the Year, shades of purple will be enhancing 2018 nuptials in everything from charming lavender bridesmaids dresses to elaborately decorated buttercream wedding cakes. The deep hues of Ultra Violet are gorgeous alone, or as a bright accent to the springtime shades of pale lilac, pink and 2017’s color of the year, greenery. With purple passion all the rage, expect springtime wedding bouquets and table centerpieces to feature floral favorites like hydrangea, lilacs, wisteria and lovely lavender roses. Still hot color schemes: navy, neutrals and dusty rose.
Modern, architectural elements: geometrics, lucite and metallics.
Couples seeking a modern, industrial vibe are choosing the clean, minimalist look of acrylic backdrops and translucent seating. Look for lucite invitations, place cards, menus and signage. Geometric designs will adorn stationery, cakes and modern tablescapes , with geometric votives and hanging lanterns paired with florals and trendy succulents. Metallics were everywhere in 2017, with rose gold hues appearing in glittery votives and glam bridesmaids dresses. The metallic trend is updated with shimmering copper the top choice for 2018. Next on the metallic horizon – chrome and silver.
Wedding cakes as edible works of art.
The traditional white buttercream tiers are a timeless and elegant choice, due to make a resurgence in 2018. Still, many couples are opting for a more unique, contemporary take on the wedding cake. The possibilities are endless:
- Incredible geode cakes showcase interiors that are as stunning as they are tasty.
- Planning a garden fete? Consider the delicate artistry of a wedding cake with beautiful hand painted details.
- True works of art: unique brushstroke cakes, in white or multicolored chocolate.
- Wedding cake creations are inspired by trending décor, adding marble and metallic designs and geometric accents.
The Romance of a Royal Wedding and a Princess Bride
From the elegant Grace Kelly to blushing Lady Di and chic Duchess Kate, royal brides are wedding style setters. The storybook romance of Britain’s Prince Harry and American celebrity Meghan Markle is sure to follow suit. All eyes are on the happy couple as they plan the details of their May nuptials at Windsor Castle. Anticipate a British flair to 2018 weddings with sparkling tiaras, all-children wedding parties and fairytale settings. Already trending is the happy couple’s reported–and unusual — choice of a banana wedding cake.
Look up! Hanging centerpieces
Exquisite hanging pieces are a romantic, extravagant replacement for the traditional tabletop flower arrangement. Rustic décor is complemented by cascading greenery hoops. More formal settings are transformed with lush floral chandeliers of beautiful roses and hydrangeas. For a more casual look, hang mercury glass jars and votive candles. Balloons are not just for birthdays. Pair hanging balloons with fairy lights for a magical evening decor, or spell out floating balloon messages over your dessert and sweetheart tables. Boho chic brides will choose sweet crocheted dreamcatchers, retro macramé wall hangings and crystal embellishments.
