There are so many beautiful, timeless wedding traditions to incorporate into your special day. From the first dance to wearing something blue, weddings are riddled with time-honored traditions. For the more adventurous couple though, you may want to venture from these traditions with your own unique spin. Here we have some awesome twists on wedding traditions to give you an idea about how to make your wedding day truly memorable!
Surprise First Dances
The moment that the newlyweds step on the floor for their first dance is truly a special and romantic moment for everyone. While some couples opt for the traditional first dance accompanied by their favorite song, some couples opt for a more whimsical and entertaining approach. Surprise wedding dances have quickly become the hot new trend in wedding receptions. Many couples begin with a classic slow dance, and quickly break into a mash-up of popular dance songs. Some even incorporate the whole wedding party into their dance. While a traditional first dance is beautiful, a fast-paced surprise number might be just the right fit to make your wedding unforgettable!
Wedding Cake, Cupcakes, or Pie
While your guests may look forward to watching you and your spouse cutting the cake, and lovingly shoving it into each other’s mouths, many couples are doing their own take on the traditional wedding cake. Many people are skipping the cake cutting completely and opting for wedding cupcake towers. This way each guest can take their own perfectly portioned cake. Another trend in wedding cakes is using small cakes as centerpieces for each table. A lot of couples are also replacing the traditional wedding cake with sweet treats that better match their tastes like pie, sundaes, or cookies.
Non-Traditional Bouquet/Garter Toss
Traditionally, a bride will toss her bouquet into a crowd of single gals attending the wedding. While many women participate in this activity, some feel that it is a bit cliche. Instead, many brides are diverging from this classic, and using the bouquet toss as an opportunity to honor a special woman in their life instead. You may use this time to instead present the bouquet to your mother, grandmother, or a mentor. Many couples are also opting to have non-traditional garter tosses. Since the garter toss can quickly escalate into a raunchy tradition, those who have lots of children attending the wedding, may choose to do a “toss” for the kids instead. Consider throwing out small bags of candy or teddy bears out for the kids to catch, and take home as a special treat.
Unique Wedding Send-Offs
While rice was used as the traditional wedding send-off for ages, many have steered clear of this tradition due to the controversy of whether rice can hurt birds who may ingest it. Couples have instead come up with other fun and unique ways to have their guests say farewell, before they depart for their honeymoon. If you and your spouse will be leaving the reception at night, have your guests light sparklers to brighten the way. Again, if there will be lots of children present consider using bubbles, so that the kids can have fun and take home their leftover bubbles. A great idea to use for an outdoor wedding/reception is homemade, environmentally friendly confetti. Gather lots of leaves and use a hole punch to create oodles of bright and natural confetti.
Your wedding day should have a personality as bright and unique as you and your partner! Incorporate these fun twists on old wedding traditions, to make a special day that neither you or your guests will forget.
