When it comes to makeup for your big day, there is typically one style most brides will lean towards – simple. Most brides want a very simplistic makeup look, usually with neutral colors. When I was planning my own wedding day makeup, I made sure to tell my makeup artist that I still wanted to look like me, only better. I choose a neutral eye color and a statement lip (red to bring out my Latina side!). There are some simple wedding makeup looks to achieve that natural yet wedding day appropriate look. One caveat – I’m not a makeup artist, so find someone you trust to bring your makeup vision to life. Get a makeup trial and make sure that your comfortable with whoever you hire for your special day. You’ll be in a LOT of pictures so you want to make sure you think you look good!
For all my ginger haired ladies or those with redish toned hair, consider shades of brown to bring out the color of the eyes and to compensate with the intensity of your hair color. Don’t go to heavy on the blush! It can make your face look much redder since you already have ginger hair!
You blonde brides (natural or not) can go with a bold black or a smokey eye to draw attention to your eyes. You can also get away with a statement lips since you’re working with a lighter hair color palette.
For my ladies with black or brown hair, you have the best of both worlds! Both brown and black work really well on the eyes when it comes to makeup for your wedding day. Consider a highlighter in the corner of your eyes to really make them pop. You’ll also be able to do a deeper statement lip (like I did) since you have a darker palette in general.
And for my ladies that have more melanin in your skin (my black, brown, and olive toned girls), think more bold colors that really stand out from your natural tone but compliment and enhance it. Simple smokey eyes or a simple black liner go a long way and you’ll look awesome with a dark, bold, lip (if you can’t tell, I love a bold lip color).
No matter the colors you go with, DON’T WAIT UNTIL YOUR WEDDING DAY TO SEE WHAT IT’LL LOOK LIKE! I don’t mean to yell, but I cannot stress that enough. My own makeup artist, Takia Ross of Accessmatized Make-Up traveled to my home for my make-up trial and made me feel awesome in the process. If you have bridesmaids (or moms) in the wedding party who are not the same skin tone as you, consider getting a makeup trial for them as well. You want to make sure whoever you hire is well versed in doing makeup on all skin tones (you’ll be surprised how many makeup artists don’t have this skill).
When it comes to you wedding day look, keep it clean and simple. Your partner wants to see the person they love at the alter, not a drastically different person! Glam it up but make sure you look like you!
